Polka Children’s Theatre, Wimbledon

Following a two-stage design competition, Foster Wilson Architects were chosen to redevelop the Polka Children’s Theatre in Wimbledon.

The main focus was to improve the quality and functionality of the existing building and spaces provided. The design also seeks to improve the sustainability of the theatre, both by reducing running costs and providing more opportunities for generating income through the caf., the shop and the hiring of spaces for private events.

The public areas of the building are re-imagined to improve the facilities they offer and the way in which they present themselves to the public and the street. Internal and external spaces have been redesigned to be more attractive to young audiences.

A new highly flexible early years theatre space will be provided for 0-6 year olds, to suit the needs of both incoming productions and Polkas own early years productions. A new mixed-use studio space and creative learning education space will also be provided

Design work has been completed up to RIBA Stage 5 and the theatre is due to re-open in Autumn 2020.
